Charred and Spalted Maple Bowl
Charred and Spalted Maple Bowl
Straight-sided Maple bowl that has been charred on the outside sealed with a homemade 50/50 mineral oil/beeswax salve on the inside.
The charring process is time consuming, firstly charring, then wire brushing to remove the dust and then waxing while still warm. This stops any further degradation of the charred finish. This is then followed up with a light pass of the blow torch to further melt the wax into any recesses, a light sand, and then a final coat of clear wood wax. The overall finish on the outside is little like the surface of a vinyl record, with small concentric ridges o0n a smooth black surface.
Internally the spalting contrasts beautifully with the pale grain and figure of the Maple, and a hairline crack from the outside is mirrored on the internal surface...beautiful.
