Fired Apple & Facets
Using flames to enhance wood may seem a little counter intuitive, but controlled heat and a bit of after-care can reveal quite spectacular results.
Here I have turned a platter from Apple, felled near Palmers Green just a few weeks prior, and charred the underside of the bowl as soon as it came off the lathe. Taking the burnt matter back a little with 120 grit sandpaper and sealing with a clear wood wax has left this beautiful red-tinged tiger stripe effect.
Also, notice the hand carved facets on the underside of the foot. Not many people will get to see it...but you and I will know it's there ;)
